Phillip Carelli’s childhood was, to say the least, unsettled. He never knew his mother had abandoned him in search of herself leaving him to his father and that his father spent a great deal more time in the Middle East fighting terrorists than he did raising him. When his father is killed in action, he is shipped off to live with his Aunt Eleanor, an internationally renowned biologist. Her abilities as a researcher far exceed her abilities as a parent, but they settle into a routine that works well for both of them. Phillip shares the same spark of brilliance that has made his Aunt a celebrity in the world of science but lacks her drive. If he is obsessed with anything it is girlfriend, Joan-Mary Frazier, fast cars, and old movies. Things are going great, but tragedy is not done with him. Not long after he turns seventeen he goes out to pick up a movie, grab a bite to eat. As he leaves, the video store a hooded figure steps into the street and guns him down. Phillip’s Aunt is notified of his death and moves quickly to have his body preserved and shipped to her lab deep in the Amazon Rainforest. Even though he has been dead for days, she is convinced that she can save him. She renews a line of experimentation she had sworn an oath to abandon. She rushes to complete the process, ignores her better judgment, and uses it to resurrect her nephew. But instead of giving life to the boy she’d raised, she creates a living skeleton.
When Phillip sees himself in the mirror for the first time, he is overwhelmed by the monster he has become. He is driven to the point of madness by an “enhancement,” as his Aunt phrased it that has given him an amazing sense of smell. Within a few short days he learns why dogs growl at certain people: Evil Stinks! As he begins to overcome the shock of his new form he vows not to become a living version of the mindless movie monsters he had always disdained. He works to gain control over his new form and use his ability to “smell evil” to track down the person who shot him and terrorize anyone who gets in his way.
Over his Aunt’s objections, he returns to their Villa in New York and begins to refer to himself as “The Doctor.” Returning from the dead has not diminish his, now unhealthy, obsession with his old girlfriend. He tracks her down and forces her and her current lover, Professor Tony Seppilli, to help him execute his plan. They are joined by Kriss, a Hoatzin he saved in the Amazon, 114 of rats who obey him without question, and two very strange Chinese housekeepers who believe he is the reincarnation of “Wu Chang, Supreme Emissary of Dead Souls.” His belief that humiliation is a far more effective punishment than incarceration or a quick death, leads to some of the most unusual headlines in the history of the New York press and the arrest of politicians, religious leaders and society elites who had always appeared to be above reproach.
In many ways Philip is still the 17 year old who blead to death in the street. It’s an issue his Aunt has failed to address. The family fortune is substantial as well as the money Phillip inherited from his father have left them quite well off. Phillip intends to use those funds to finance his vendetta. He also decides a monster should drive a monster and orders a 700+ HP Ford Mustang. Once behind the wheel his concern for his fellow drivers is non-existent. To quote The Doctor “Immortality offers a certain freedom to one's driving habits.” …
Soon the attacks perpetrated by the Doctor and his vigilantes become a daily staple for print, TV, and radio. But fame has its drawbacks. Word spreads north and finally reaches Dr. Alida Sibley the Director of the “DoubleWhite Center for the Study of Bioenergetics & Psychoanalysis”. She is brilliant, vicious, unforgiving and Eleanor’s former research partner. When she learns of Phillip’s existence, she knows Eleanor has betrayed her. So she sets a plan in motion to create and release some monsters of her own. Their goal: destroy Phillip and exact revenge on Eleanor.
The Doctor’s abilities will lead him and his team on many adventures. Does he know there are others out there created by a modified version of the process that returned him from the dead? Does he suspect they would track him down? Is his visit to the Empire State Building a fatal mistake or just part of the plan? You’ll find out. But until then, you can’t imagine what the hell is going on.
